Why choosing Linen socks ? where does this raw and local material come from and how does it became known alL over the world ?
Linen history and how it grew so close to our skin.
Flax is one of the first seed cultivated by humans, with barley, wheat, peas and lentils. We traced his first culture in the Fertile Crecsent tens of thousands years ago, a geographical area with generous rains. Popular a long time in Egypt for the manufacture of clothing, funeral fabrics, sails, ropes or nets, it arrived in France in the 13th century, in Brittany. The use of flax reached its peak in the 17th century, where much finer clothing and accessories such as blouses, handkerchiefs and fine lace were made.
A Frenchman, Philippe de Girard, invented the linen spinning machine and helped refine the weaving. Thus, the North of France developped its know-how and became one of the first industrial spinning center in Europe for linen. The industrialization competition and the massive arrival of cotton has led to a decline in French flax production… But it will reborn after the Second World War, thanks to the improvement in flax fiber and flaw tow separation. Nowadays, France is the biggest flax producer for textile industry.
Thanks to increasingly sophisticated techniques, linen yarns have become adapted to the various industrial textile machines. With its fine and silky aspect, linen jersey has its place in fashion. This knitted version of linen also avoids the disavantage of ironing, which could sometimes be tedious. It is therefore natural that this soft and thermoregulatory material was introduced into our wardrobes, as close as possible to our body, in T-shirts, socks, underwear and panties!
Test the linen as close to your skin and feel the comfort of our linen socks to the tips of the toes!
Linen Socks : a significant detail for a responsible agriculture.
Why is linen an ecological fiber ? It is a thoughtfully cultivated fibre mostly used in North of France, in Normandy and in Western Paris. Due to the rainy climate and a temperature rarely exceeding 25°C during its growth, flax requires very little irrigation. Over a year, it is customary to share the growing calendar with a winter cereal. Flax is complementary to other cultivated seeds. It improves their yield and helps clarify the soils by pushing back some « undesirable weeds ». To maintain a good soil balance, flax in chosen only once every 6 years on the same plot. This balance allows farmers to avoid pesticides when growing flax.
It’s also a zero waste fibre. Everything is used in flax. The plant is divided into long fibers and tows, the seeds are intended for food. Flax agriculture represents a recognized pool of know-how and a significant workforce. It is a 100% vegetable fiber as opposed to animal products like wool or silk. At FANTOME, we love flax for all these reasons: it is local, plant based, zero waste and vegan!
With our collections of linen socks, we meet the challenge to mix ecology, style and comfort while enhancing local production. We want to encourage the sustainability of an ancestral local industry: giving a boost to French farmers and industrialists while reducing gobal carbon footprint! Yes, FANTOME is a small company. But if all the little ones get together, we become big !
